Pitkin County Goes Digital

Pitkin County Goes Digital
Just like the rest of the country, rural Pitkin County is converting from analog to digital television signal transmission.  The good news is this means that those in the County who are in the line of site of any of six towers will now be able to view the county's free TV service including ABC,NBC,CBS,FOX, and PBS. Some may also receive the community government station on channel 11.

Open For Business

Open For Business

This weekend all four Aspen ski mountains were open for the Season.  Aspen and Snowmass Mountains opened two weeks ago, but Highlands and Buttermilk did not open until last Saturday.  Much to the delight of local powder hounds, the ski conditions were fantastic, and a large portion of the Highlands Bowl was open for the ambitious skiers.

Sunday I had the opportunity to ski a few runs on Aspen Mountain.  It was snowing so hard every run was fresh tracks.  There were no lift lines and the temperature was warmer than it had been in weeks.

An Aspen Traffic Jam

An Aspen Traffic Jam

Yesterday on the commute into Aspen I was stalled by our local elk herd crossing McLain Flats Road.

Aspen traffic jams are much more entertaining than the average.

Old Man Winter is Paying a Visit

Old Man Winter is Paying a Visit

This morning I woke up to a dusting of new snow in my front yard, but as I prepared to leave my house, I walked outside and suddenly it turned into a blizzard, leaving several inches of new snow within an hour.  The snow is due to continue to fall throughout today and more is predicted to fall later this week.

My skis are waxed and I am ready for a lunch time top to bottom run on Aspen Mountain...

Keeping in mind..."There are no friends on a powder day."

Tenants include, Forum Phi Architects, and PoP, an oxygen bar and candy store, Welcome Home property management company, Aspen Solar, Engineered Portfolio Partners, Jones Trading, Thomas Law Firm and Cloud 9 Brownies.

North of Nell Building Gets a Facelift

North of Nell Building Gets a Facelift

The four story condo building at the base of Aspen Mountain home of Starbucks, Aspen Sports and other popular businesses just got an exterior facelift.  The North of Nell Building opens onto the Silver Queen gondola plaza, and is in the core of downtown Aspen.  It has underground parking for owners and guests, and units rent out regularly for the entire winter season.  Since its inception in 1968, the North of Nell building was considered by many Aspenites as monolithic and monotonous.  It's shoebox shaped shell was recently updated with new wide columns, dark cedar wood panelling and new deck railings.

The building now blends in well with its neighbors which include the Little Nell Hotel, the Residences at Little Nell and the Hyatt Grand Aspen.

How do You Earn a Lifetime Ski Pass and Breakfast at the Weinerstube in Aspen?

How do You Earn a Lifetime Ski Pass and Breakfast at the Weinerstube in Aspen?

Yesterday Aspen icon and ski clothing mogol, Klaus Obermeyer celebrated his 90th birthday at the Sundeck on Aspen Mountain with a large group of supporters.  He was presented with a lifetime ski pass from Mike Kaplan of Aspen Ski Company, and a lifetime of breakfast at the Weinerstube in Aspen.

As a local of five years, my first encounter with Klaus was my first day skiing on Aspen Mountain.  I heard a familiar yodel from the lift line at Ajax Express (both of my grandfather's were talented yodellers), and I turned around to see an ear to ear grin on a man who I thought looked no older than 65.  Everyone around him was smiling, patting his back, and sharing in his joy...for life.  Klaus' positive attitude and smile are contagious to everyone he encounters.   He is the embodiment of what Aspen was and is.  Healthy, happy, and still skiing Aspen Mountain into his 90s.

An inspiration to us all...Happy Birthday, Klaus!
