Foreclosure of Murder Suspect's Aspen Home

Foreclosure of Murder Suspect's Aspen Home
Aspen's infamous fugitive murder suspect, Pamela Phillips, is back in the news. Her Aspen home has gone to foreclosure and sale back to Wells Fargo Bank for $4.41 million.  Phillips is still wanted on multiple charges related to allegedly having her ex-husband murdered 13 years ago. She was still on the run, until recently when she was arrested and jailed in Lichtenstein, Austria for fraud.  She may finally be awaiting extradition back to the US, after Austrian officials discovered the outstanding warrant for her arrest.

Buyer Discount Offered On Viceroy

Buyer Discount Offered On Viceroy
Troubled Snowmass Base Village developer, Related WestPac, insists they are making efforts to press forward with the overall Base Village project and hopes that a 30% discount offered to buyers of the Viceroy hotel condos will expedite the closing process. It is questionable at this point whether the group of buyers, now suing to break contract, will entertain the offer.

Local is Named National Private Banker

Local is Named National Private Banker
Aspen's only private bank and national savings association, Gibraltar Private Bank & Trust, has brought in long-time Colorado and Aspen resident, Aaron Pearlman, as their Private Banking and Lending Specialist.  Aaron's banking experience includes a combination of commercial and residential lending and asset management.  He was most recently President of American National Bank in Aspen. Gibraltar Private Bank & Trust has been doing business in Aspen for about 10 years. As a national S&L association, the Bank has few regulatory challenges and hopes to grow its private banking business locally through residential lending contacts in the Aspen, SE Florida and New York markets.

Haiti's Plight Close to Home in the Heart of Aspen

Haiti's Plight Close to Home in the Heart of Aspen

Founded in 1994 by Aspenites Susie and Joe Krabacher, the Mercy and Sharing Foundation assists underprivileged children in the impoverished country of Haiti.  The Foundation consists of multiple facilities, including orphanages and feeding centers, private hospitals and schools.  The Mercy and Sharing Foundation's efforts will be even more important in the aftermath of the catastrophic earthquake in Port-au-Prince this week. More than ever, the Mercy and Sharing Foundation is in need of donations to fund rescue and recovery efforts there.  The Foundation covers all of its own operating costs in Haiti and so all donations can be made with confidence that they will directly benefit the Haitian children and people in dire need. Please go to www.haitichildren.com/donation/ to make your donation.

New At Winterskol 2010

New At Winterskol 2010
Winterskol is Aspen's annual toast to winter.  It takes place this year from Wednesday, January 13 to Sunday, January 17. The five-day event is packed with activities that celebrate Aspen's history and tradition. Winterskol 2010 will be no different.  But, there are some brand new activities this year that local groups hope will also put contemporary Aspen into the spotlight.  Some of these new events include the first Pub Crawl, ever in Snowmass Village, at the mall on Friday from 3-5 pm, Nordic racing along with dog sledding, or "Skijoring," at the Aspen Golf Course on Saturday at noon, and then finally a huge celebration at Aspen Highlands on Sunday, featuring the new Ice Bar at Willow Creek Bistro and an outdoor LunchFest put on by the Highlands Restaurants on Sunday 9 am - 2 pm.

10 day Aspen Closing for $4,200,000

10 day Aspen Closing for $4,200,000

As the Aspen real estate market continues to improve, signs of the "old days" are also returning.  On Monday, December 28, 2009, I received an offer on one of my single family home listings.  The cash offer called for a closing in three days, December 31, 2009.  Under normal circumstances, this was possible.  Unfortunately, the seller was on a Caribbean cruise.  The offer was negotiated verbally and ultimately closed the following Wednesday, January 6, 2010, for $4,200,000.

711 Spruce Street, Aspen

$4,200,000

4 bedrooms/4.5 baths

2 acres overlooking Aspen on Smuggler Mountain

Wheeler Expansion Cancelled

Wheeler Expansion Cancelled
Plans for building a 265 seat performing arts theatre, as part of the proposed $30 million expansion to Aspen's Wheeler Opera House, have fallen away.  According to the Wheeler's Executive Director, Gram Slaton, the project has been suspended.  Cancellation of the project is apparently due to City Council requirement for further study on the need for the facility.

SkiCo In The Limelight

SkiCo In The Limelight

The Limelight Lodge in downtown Aspen is under contract for purchase by the Aspen Skiing Company.  The purchase price is not yet public information, but Pitkin County assessors estimate the value of the recently redeveloped Lodge at nearly $51 million.  The original lodge was acquired by the Paas Family in the late 1950s.  The family owns and operates the Limelight to this day.  The new Limelight Lodge was unveiled in November 2008, including the refurbished 100,000 square foot hotel and 14 high-end condos across the street at Monarch on the Park.  The SkiCo plans to take over operations at the Limelight in March of this year following closing of the sale.
