Whitewater Rafting

Aspen Whitewater Rafting

Experience the thrill of whitewater rafting!  From May until September, Aspen is home to world class whitewater rafting and kayaking.  With several rivers to choose from there is fun for everyone.

The Roaring Fork River is home to several sections of whitewater as it winds down from the top of Independence Pass until joining the Colorado River in Glenwood Springs.  The Lower Roaring Fork runs from Carbondale to Glenwood Springs and includes Class II and Class III rapids including Cemetery Rapid.  If you are looking for more challenging waters check out the Upper Roaring Fork River which runs from Woody Creek to Basalt with Class II rapids and plenty of adventure.  Slaughterhouse is the the famed rapid in this section.

The Colorado River near Glenwood Springs contains Shoshone Rapids, a Class III section of whitewater.  As you rock and roll through Glenwood Canyon be sure to check out your surroundings with incredible view of the canyon.  Famous rapids in this stretch include Pinball, the Wall and Superstition.  The Shoshone section of river is relatively short and so some rafters with do multiple runs.  Alternatively you can continue your trip through Grizzly to Glenwood Springs.  This section is mostly flat water with some Class II rapids.  It is a perfect stretch for the whole family.

New to the Aspen area is the Glenwood Springs Whitewater Park.  Home to a river wide feature or wave, this Park is great for park and play kayaking.  Depending on the level of the water, the wave presents itself in different ways, typically as a Class III rapid.  The Whitewater Park brings some very talented kayakers to the area.  Stop and watch their techniques as you pass through Glenwood Springs.

If you are looking for bigger water and bigger adventure, head over to the Arkansas River for the Numbers Section.  In addition to a very scenic drive over Independence Pass to the river, you'll enjoy continuous rapids up to Class IV.  This section of river is best suited for an adventurous beginner to advanced rafter.  Children under 16 are not recommended in joining trips for this section.
