Off to a Snowy Start...But Not Without Challenges

December 1, 2008

After much anticipation, ski season is off to a great start this year following a dry and warm fall.  Wednesday before Thanksgiving (opening day on Aspen and Snowmass Mountains) brought several inches of snow to the area mountains, and the snow didn't stop falling until Monday morning  Despite the exciting jump start to the season, there were challenges due to maintenance issues and adverse weather.  The gondola and several lifts were shut down most of Sunday and the gondola will remain closed throughout Monday due to maintenance issues.  Skiers and boarders are still able to access the top of the mountain by riding the Little Nell chair to Bell Mountain chair to Ajax Express chair.  Despite the round about route to the top of the mountain, riders are coming down the Little Nell run in swarms.

More snow is expected throughout this week on all four of the Aspen area mountains.

Snowfall reported by Mountain over the last 7 days:

Buttermilk 10" (opening December 13th)

Highlands 15" (opening December 13th)

Aspen 15" (Open)

Snowmass 13" (Open)
