Two new coffee shops are set to open this week in downtown Aspen. Victoria's Espresso and Wine Bar has taken the former Ben & Jerry's location on the Hyman Avenue Mall. They will be serving artisan grounds and small production Colorado wines with some priced less than $5.
Parallel 15, located in the lower level of the Hyman Avenue Mall and Mill Street will be an all organic coffee house catering to the late night goers. Wireless Internet and acoustic musicians will be available along with Belgium waffles and panini sandwiches during the days.
Over recent months Starwood Resorst and Hotels Worldwide Inc. has announced the need to sell several several of its hotel properties. In early November, Starwood sold the Turnberry Resort in Scotland for approximately $100 million to the Dubai-based Leisurecorp, who then entered into a 30 year management agreement. The sale of their properties will be married to long term management agreements in which Starwood would sell the bricks, but keep the brains.
The FAA could force Pitkin County to build a 188-foot airport control tower to enable air traffic controllers to see the end of the extended Sardy Field runway. The new tower would be four times the height of the current 47-foot facility.
Aspen Junior Hockey initiates boys and girls in the program starting around ages 6-7. Most kids remain active in the program through high school. Every other year, Aspen High School hockey players are rewarded for their years of dedication with a trip to Europe, paid for by contributions and raffles, that includes games with teams from Germany and Switzerland. This year's 11 day trip began a few days ago and is set to include games against top German and Swiss club teams.
