Aspen-Pitkin County Airport had it's busiest January in over a decade last month. Increased business had been reported for 2009 overall due to reduced airfares brought on by increased airline competition in the Aspen-Snowmass market.  Aspen and Roaring Fork Valley residents as well as visitors have taken advantage of the bargain fares and the trend continued up as 2010 settled in.

Pitkin County reported the highest gross volume of the 5 county area that Land Title tracks (Pitkin, Eagle, Routt, Summit, and Garfield), and the lowest percentage decline of the five from 2008!

Nine orphaned bear cubs, eight from Aspen and one from Basalt, were delivered to the Schneegas Wildlife Foundation in Silt.  The facility is a nonprofit wildlife rehabilitation center, where the bear cubs are being taught to survive on their own in the wild, especially in winter.  The facility boast a 98% success rate as to the number of bear cubs who have been rehabilitated and returned to the  wild.

After closing for business in March of last year, Aspen's Zele Cafe, will be replaced in their former space by Peach's Corner Cafe.  Peach's will be opened for business next month by longtime Aspenite and restaurateur, David Roth and partners. Plans for the new cafe include breakfast and lunch service to start, with both takeout and sit-down dining.  They may extend hours into the evening if feasible and have applied for a full liquor license.

Local and based pilots are invited to attend a meeting held by Aspen/Pitkin County Airport on Saturday Feb. 6 at 10 am. at the Airport Operations Center on Owl Creek Road. The meeting will address changes in FAA safety regulations, TSA rules on access and security and other issues affecting the airport and the pilot community.

Developer and landlord, Related WestPac, has looked to a longtime local and Snowmass restaurateur to open and operate a new eatery and apre-ski location at Base Village in Snowmass. The new restaurant, called Base Camp, will open on President's Day Weekend (Feb.12-15) in the same space originally occupied by Junk/Liquid Sky. It will focus more on lunch and casual bar food at apre ski.  Junk/Liquid Sky opened at the end of 2008 as a restaurant and night club. The establishment, as operated, did not survive the year and the space was taken back by Related WestPac.

According to the Aspen Skiing Company, skier traffic for Aspen-Snowmass was up for the early part of the ski season relative to last year and in comparison to other Colorado resorts. Skier numbers indicate that Aspen Skier traffic was up about 5%.
