Independence Pass Opening Delayed to June 7th

May 29, 2008

Independence Pass was scheduled to open this weekend, providing a shorter, more scenic route to Aspen and snowmass for those visiting from the front range.  However, due to heavy amounts of debris and a snow pack recorded at 185% above average, crews are struggling to get the road cleared in time.  Aspen businesses are not expecting an impact on tourist numbers, however, small towns on the west side of the pass near Leadville are hugely effected by the extended closure.

Crews will work through the weekend in an effort to make the new June 7th opening date.  Those travelling from the front range by car will have to continue taking the I-70 route for at least another week.
