Aspen Snowshoeing

Experience the peace and serenity of snowshoeing in the Aspen area. Take a trip into the backcountry for some beautiful mountain scenery and amazing fresh mountain air. Guides can be hired for a snowshoeing adventure or travel one of the many well marked routes with family and friends.

The Aspen area offers outstanding trails for snowshoeing. The Aspen Snowmass Nordic Trail System, known as “Aspen's Fifth Mountain,” offers over 90 kilometers of snowshoe and cross country skiing trails. This system of trails is free and connects the areas of Aspen, Snowmass, and Basalt. It is advised that snowshoers should walk beside groomed trails as not to hinder those cross country skiing. Another area for snowshoeing close to Aspen is Sunlight Mountain Ski Resort above Glenwood Springs. Sunlight Mountain has over ten miles of backcountry that is wonderful for snowshoeing. The trails here start out groomed and relatively flat then start to become steeper. Sunlight's backcountry trails are free and well marked.

For those more experienced, the backcountry of the Elk Mountains is an ideal place for snowshoeing. The area offers more remote and difficult terrain. Those who travel in the area need to have skills of route finding and avalanche safety. The trail to Lindly Hut is one of the less difficult trails in the area. It starts out flat and well marked, then becomes a climb as it follows a road. The trail then goes off road and route finding becomes necessary. Since the area is so isolated, a minimum of eight people are required to reserve Lindly Hut. Updated in 2002, the hut provides a wood burning stove, sleeping, cooking, and bathroom facilities.

Richmond Ridge, Maroon Creek Trail, and Hunter Creek are all areas where you can take a guided snowshoe adventure. These guided adventures often include rentals and meals. The Aspen and Snowmass ski resorts also offer daily snowshoe adventures. Just ask about meeting times and locations.
